New Bern, West Craven, Jones Senior advance

Pamlico lone local team to fall in playoffs

Nov 9, 2007 10:59 pm

It got scary for a bit, but the New Bern football team took care of business Friday night, stomping Sanderson, 48-20, to advance to the second round of the 4-AA state playoffs.

The Bears (10-2) jumped out to a 21-0 lead as the offense had first downs or touchdowns on 11 of the first 13 plays from scrimmage.

Vince McDuffie, who finished with 113 yards on 16 carries with three TDs, scored from 1-yard out to make it 7-0 with 8:47 to go in the first quarter. He made it 14-0 with an 11-yard scamper four minutes later.

Bears quarterback Brett Williams connected with McDuffie on an 18-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the second quarter and it appeared a rout was on.

But Sanderson (6-6) got the ball on the Bears' next drive after New Bern attempted a fake punt, but fumbled the snap.

Eight plays later, Spartan running back Brewer Brunson scored from 3 yards out to cut the lead to 14 with 2:53 to go in the half.

On the next play from scrimmage, Williams' pass was tipped by Perry Simmons and intercepted by Fred McCullough at the 6. Three plays later, Jeff Massey ran in from 1 yard out to cut the lead to 21-14.

The Bears came out and scored on their first two drives of the second half, getting a 1-yard run by McDuffie and a 19-yard run by Tyrell Lindsay.

Lindsay had a 37-yard TD pass to Demarcus Howell and an 8-yard TD strike to Mike Price for the Bears' other scores.

Sanderson's other score came on a 5-yard pass by Massey to Matt James.

New Bern, on an eight-game winning streak, will play Athens Drive at home next week. Athens Drive held off the Chip Williams coached Wakefield team, 41-39, to advance.
